Look, we're not saying locking up the tequila was our smartest idea.
But it's happened now.
There's a bottle of Espolòn sitting behind bars at Barrio Shoreditch throughout September and, because apparently nobody thought to hide the keys properly, you've got a chance to get it out.
This is Unleash the Tequila.
So... how do I get the tequila?
Very good question.
Order an Espolòn cocktail.
We'll bring out the keys.
You choose one.
Then comes the important bit.
Walk up to the cage. Insert key. Turn.
If nothing happens, commiserations. You've still got your cocktail, so things could be considerably worse.
But if that lock opens...
Congratulations. The Espolòn is yours.And yes, your mates will suddenly claim they told you to pick that key.
What's all the fuss about Espolòn?
Espolòn comes from the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, and its unmistakable bottles take inspiration from the work of Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada.
The tequila itself is made for exactly the sort of things we enjoy at Barrio: Margaritas, late nights, questionable decisions and ordering another round when everyone definitely said the last one was the last one.
Which makes locking it in a cage particularly cruel, really.
Think you've got the key?
There's no secret technique.
No clue hidden somewhere in this article.
And buying the bartender a shot probably won't help either.
You'll just have to trust your instincts.

Promotion available at Barrio Shoreditch from 1–30 September 2026, subject to availability.
Open to UK residents aged 18 or over. Valid photo ID may be required.
To participate, guests must purchase an eligible Espolòn cocktail during the promotional period and will then be invited to select a key and attempt to unlock the promotional Espolòn cage.
If the selected key successfully opens the lock, the guest wins the Espolòn bottle contained within the cage, subject to availability.
One attempt is permitted per eligible Espolòn cocktail purchased.
Keys must be selected and used in the venue at the time of participation and cannot be retained, exchanged or transferred for a later attempt.
Prizes are non-transferable, have no cash alternative and cannot be exchanged for another product.
Alcohol prizes will only be awarded to guests aged 18 or over. Barrio reserves the right to request valid photo identification before awarding a prize.
Barrio operates a Challenge 25 policy and reserves the right to refuse the sale or supply of alcohol in accordance with licensing requirements and its responsible service of alcohol policy.
The promotion may be amended, suspended or withdrawn where circumstances outside the promoter's reasonable control make this necessary.
